topSnow and Ice Control
During snow and ice conditions, normal transportation patterns for pedestrians and vehicles are interrupted. Driving conditions encountered include general loss of traction, visibility, steering and braking ability. The public can reduce their risk by using good winter driving equipment such as winter tires and chains and by using caution to match the road conditions during winter weather. Minimum vehicle trips are recommended.
Please be aware that when snow plowing activities occur, all snow is not taken off the streets, which may lead to freezing ice conditions. As streets have numerous manhole covers and serious injury could arise if a manhole was hit with a plow blade. Plows are set just above the surface of the road when clearing snow and ice.
Municipality Priorities for Clearing Snow and Ice:
The main objective of Snow removal and Ice control is to provide the following service as resources allow in the following order of priority:
- Provide access to emergency sites for medical, fire or police response
- Reduce driving hazards on arterial and collector routes
- Reduce driving hazards on hills (generally considered as greater than 6% slope) and bridges
- Reduce driving hazards on bus routes
Residential Streets
Residential streets are not cleared except for emergency situations.
Sidewalks
Sidewalks are not cleared by the District of Maple Ridge except when they front a property owned by the Municipality or on a Municipal facility such as bridges. Snow removal on sidewalks is regulated by Maple Ridge Highway and Traffic Bylaw 3136-1982 - Section 9.1 which reads as follows:
"Every owner or occupier of real property shall remove snow, ice, leaves, dirt or other debris from sidewalks, stairs, ramps and foot paths bordering the real property as well as walkways, ramps and stairs on real property which are open to the public, no later than 10:00 in the morning of the day following the accumulation."
The District of Maple Ridge encourages everyone to clear sidewalks and help those who cannot.
Public Walkways and Trails
Public walkways and trails are not cleared by the District of Maple Ridge.
Lanes
Lanes are not cleared by the District of Maple Ridge except when required for an emergency.

Vacuum sweepers draw debris & use specialized attachments to reduce dust, collect leaves, and clean catch basins. In the Spring, sweepers remove sand deposited for snow and ice control in order to prevent sand from grinding away street markings and clogging drains. In the Fall, sweepers remove leaves and other debris from the streets as quickly as possible to prevent leaves from clogging drains.

Traffic Signals
The Operations Centre maintains existing traffic lights. Please report any flashing or non-functional traffic lights. Specific traffic signals are programmed to allow traffic to progress along Dewdney Trunk Road, at the posted speed limit, to minimize the number of red lights encountered. This programming is in effect from 222 Street to 232 Street along Dewdney Trunk Road. Many signals are controlled by overhead cameras.
The Ministry of Transportation and Highways is responsible for traffic lights along the Lougheed Highway from Kanaka Way east to Mission and from 222 Street west to Pitt Meadows. Call the Operations Centre for the appropriate contact phone numbers for the Ministry of Transportation and Highways.
