Maple Ridge Ready to Issue Flood Alert

May 31, 2007 / 12:00 AM

Based on up-to-date information received from the BC River Forecast Centre, the District of Maple Ridge may be issuing a flood alert to some areas in the District that could be impacted by rising waters beginning next week.

A week from now some sections of Ruskin at the Stave River and areas along Wharf Street situated on the river side of the dike could become flooded. By June 7 when the Fraser River reaches 5.5 - 6.0 meters at the Mission gauge as predicted it will by the River Forecast Centre, the District of Maple Ridge will have already activated its Emergency Operations Centre.

"Our Emergency Operations Centre has been working hard to prepare for the potential of spring flooding," said Jim Rule, Chief Administrative Officer and Director of the Emergency Operations Centre for Maple Ridge. "The comprehensive communications program we have been following has done a good job alerting our community about the potential of spring flooding and the importance of personal preparedness."

The District at this point wants to do its best to ensure its citizens are fully informed of the latest situation regarding potential flooding. People in Maple Ridge are urged to watch the District's website for the most up-to-date conditions or phone the Call Centre at 604-467-7475, Monday to Friday 8:00 am to 4:00 pm.
