New 224 Street Bridge Re-Opens

February 8, 2008 / 12:00 AM

Maple Ridge, BC: The District of Maple Ridge is pleased to announce that a new bridge over Blaney Creek at 224 Street is now open after the old structure was removed due to its deteriorating condition. After conducting an inspection of the old 224 Street bridge this past October, the District's consultant recommended that the bridge be closed to heavy vehicles due to its deteriorating condition. Within days of receiving this information the District put in place a temporary structure able to carry all regular traffic until a new permanent bridge could be built.

The old bridge was removed at the beginning of January this year with construction of the new structure starting immediately afterwards. Numerous piles reaching depths of 30 meters were required due to boggy soil conditions in the area. After the piling was completed, construction of the actual bridge structure began and moved forward smoothly. The new bridge will have somewhat of an unceremonious beginning in that it will retain its same name and there is no special opening event planned.

The District of Maple Ridge thanks everyone who may have been inconvenienced in any way by the construction of the bridge but is confident that the new structure will serve the community well for years to come.
