Garden Suites

Maple Ridge's Official Community Plan identifies Garden Suites as a possible option for modest density infill in Urban, Suburban and Rural residential neighbourhoods. In the 2006 Planning Department Business Plan, Council authorized the Planning Department to undertake this study. Based on this direction, a discussion paper has been prepared that highlights the regulatory and technical issues that should be considered if pursuing Bylaws to allow Detached Garden Suites in this municipality. This report highlights the findings in the "Detached Garden Suites - discussion paper" [PDF, 1 MB] and identifies a consultation program and timeline to explore the feasibility of providing Detached Garden Suites as a desirable housing option in the community. The ultimate goal of the Detached Garden Suite review will be the adoption of Bylaw(s), Policy and Guidelines to introduce this new housing form where appropriate. Presentation of this report concludes Phase I and the consultation process will be organized primarily into two following phases involving Technical Review and Public Consultation (Phase II) and Bylaw preparation (Phase III). The Discussion paper and Report was reviewed at the December 10, 2007 Council Workshop, and a three-phased process was endorsed by Council. The first Open House was held January 30, 2008. 

The second Open House was held Wednesday, May 28, 2008. The purpose of this Open House was to review the proposed regulations [PDF, 9.56 MB] with respect to the proposed Policy and Bylaw amendments.
