You may have feelings or mood swings that surprise or even frighten you, which is to be expected after returning from a disaster response. If you can begin to anticipate your moods, and where the feelings are coming from, you can begin to manage them. When you have time to put your disaster work into perspective, your mood should improve. If you feel you need extra help dealing with your emotions you can speak with a loved one or health professional, or contact your Emergency Support Services Director to help find the appropriate tools to assist you.
The Maple Ridge / Pitt Meadows ESS Level 1 Team responds to and assists citizens affected by a variety of localized emergencies, such as house fires.
Level 1 responders work in teams on a rotating schedule and must be available to respond 24 hours a day while on-call. Level 1 is typically activated about 6 times per year.
Members of this team require considerable ESS volunteer experience (or approval from the ESS Director).
Participate in the rotating on-call schedule (typically 2 weeks out of every 2 months)
Assist a small number of evacuees (1 – 12) with basic necessities such as food, clothing and shelter.
Meet monthly or as needed to train and exercise.
Skills & Abilities
Knowledge of BCEMS/Incident Command System
Familiar with street locations and key suppliers.
Valid BC Drivers Licence
Considerable knowledge of Registration and Referral paperwork

Training in related topics such as psychological first aid, emotional support, and caring for people with disabilities is an asset
Available to attend most scheduled committee meetings
Be scheduled for at least 2 on-call rotations per year.
